Leah Pekofsky
Co-Editor-in-Chief

This past week was Student Check-up Week—a week created by DAWN, the Drug and Alcohol Wellness Network.
“Beginning in 1998 a campus community coalition to address alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among students was formed,” said Evelina Fair, counselor intern, on the origins of the group at York College.
“DAWN was previously named LEAD (life enhancement and development) and with the help of student, faculty and staff input, the name was changed and a new logo created so that the campus community would be more aware of an existence and our purpose, to reduce harm that may be associated with drugs, alcohol and tobacco usage.”
The goal of Student Check-up week was to encourage students to take personal inventory and engage in mentally and physically healthy activities. Included in these activities were workouts, healthy eating opportunities, relaxation and fun. All of these events promoted by
DAWN are part of their purpose:
“Members of the Drug and Alcohol Wellness Network seek to advocate for programs and policies at the campus/community level that cause change in the social and cultural environments in which students make decisions about alcohol and drug use.”
Having events that encourage a healthy lifestyle and are fun for students also challenge the attitude that drinking is a “rite of passage,” a philosophy that increases risk for college students. The group focuses on moving away from this thought pattern and making students aware of the campus alcohol and drug policies, but also provides help and resources for those who are suffering from substance abuse.
This group meets three times a semester to make decisions and plans in order to promote awareness and continue resources for students to learn about making healthy choices in regards to alcohol and drug use. The members of DAWN are representatives from Student Senate; Peer Support Network and CAB. Any student interested in becoming involved with DAWN can contact Ray Gordon, Assistant Director and Residence Life for Student Development & Programming at rgordon3@ycp.edu or 717-815-1468.

Ever get that gut feeling you are being watched?
How can you lower your chances of being attacked?
Do you know what to do if you are attacked?
York College of PA is offering a free self-defense course to all female students. The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. This system is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. The class includes self defense techniques including defensive stances, punches, elbow and knee strikes, kicks, breaking chokes and holds and ground defense. The final day includes simulation scenarios where you can test your new skills on campus safety officers playing the part of aggressors. This is a perfect opportunity to vent any anger over parking tickets.
The courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D.
Thursday, February 16th 6-9 p.m.
Friday, February 17th 6-9 p.m.
Saturday, February 18th 12-3 p.m
Sunday, February 19th 12-3 p.m
Once the course is completed each female student gets a R.A.D. t-shirt to wear around campus! Interested in taking the R.A.D. System self defense class, contact the campus safety office at 815-1403 or stop by in person in Manor Northeast.

Sam Nicodemo

Staff Writer

The Student Senate is one of the backbones of our school, supporting the student body by providing events for us and looking after all the clubs and organizations that go on here. Recently, I sat down with Elizabeth Evans, the Vice President of Organizational Development, and I found out about all the upcoming Senate events and the new changes to clubs and organizations guidelines.

The Senate has implemented new requirements of clubs this semester. Club and organization leaders must attend at least two Student Senate meetings as well as do five ExCEL hours and they have to hand in a roster of their members. If the requirements are not met, budgets can be temporarily put on hold or rooms will not be able to be reserved.

The ExCEL programs are leadership programs that teach us how to become more dedicated students by providing workshops and presentations. Some presentations coming up are “Get on Board the Stewardship” which is March 7 at 6 p.m. The presentation will focus on fiscal responsibility and how to spend your organization budgets wisely. March 15 there will be another workshop called “Conflict Resolution According to Captain Planet.” It will be a workshop that focuses on conflict in clubs using the style of the classic children’s show Captain Planet.

Other than that, there are two other events for the Spring. March 21 there will be a presentation on communication and how to communicate effectively and March 28 there will be a workshop on transitioning from friend to a leader.

The Student Senate is also holding elections at the moment for the members for the Senate for next year. E-Board applications are due February 24, and after the debate and voting, swear in will be March 20. General Senator and Senior Class applications are due March 27 and after campaigning and voting, swear in will be April 10. Applications for Senior class are available in the Senate office.

This Valentine’s Day, Yorkers might want to check out some chassis and get their motors running.

Working under the premise that the principles of marketing are similar whether one’s selling a car or a relationship, a York College marketing professor has released a list of do’s and don’ts for online daters that was originally intended to help students relate to automobile advertisers.

Lew Small, assistant professor of marketing, has done academic studies to understand automobile marketing and the photography used.

He said students paid closer attention to the lesson when he used online dating profiles to help explain concepts such as the Gestalt

principles related to photography.

“(Advertisers) tend to follow some rules,” he said. “I was looking for examples to show the class about the Gestalt principle, essentially that people’s perceptions of an object are influenced by the surroundings of an object.”

When marketing themselves, he said, people tend to break a lot of rules that marketers wouldn’t. People tend to show only one picture, a “mugshot-style” photo that doesn’t tell anything about the person, he said.

So, applying the principles of marketing, here’s Small’s list of suggestions:

— Include several photos. Just as advertisers use several photos to attract buyers, a single photo of yourself won’t say much about you.

Include at least one full-body shot, and no mug-shot type head-shots. A head-shot would be equivalent to a car ad including just a head-on, close-up of the car’s grille.

— Use a quality photo. Use natural light, and make sure the light source is behind the photographer. Artificial light tends to add blue or yellow tones that kill natural glow and can make the subject look older.

Never use grainy cell-phone photos.

Instead of shots standing in front of a wall or sitting at a table, show yourself doing some of your favorite activities — from rock climbing to baking cookies — so your potential date can visualize doing things with you.

Car advertisers wouldn’t show a car in front of a blue screen. They show the car in action, like headed on a trip to the beach, so potential customers can better visualize using the car.

— No beefcake or hottie shots. Taking the easy way out by showing abs or cleavage might work for the short-term, but it is likely to be perceived as superficial.

— Show benefits rather than features: Car advertisers know the size of a car in cubic feet (a feature) will be meaningless to most potential car buyers. Saying that a car can comfortably hold six adults plus six bags of golf clubs (a benefit) is something the potential buyer can visualize.

Instead of just saying you like to experience new things, provide examples — such as trying new foods or checking out new bands — to give your potential date something to visualize.

— Show action: Advertisers use action points to tell their audience what to do next, such as directing people to their websites for more information or suggesting a test drive at a local dealership. Tell your potential dates, for example, to contact you to plan a hike in the park or relaxing lunch with interesting conversation.

— Stay fresh: Don’t keeping airing the same ad. Change pictures weekly and update your description with your latest adventures and interests. Most dating websites use techniques that keep updated profiles on the top.

York, PA -

Two police officers visited a “speakeasy” on West Jackson Street on Friday night, then returned about an hour later and busted 57 people, according to a search warrant.

York City Police’s Southwest College Neighborhood Unit, along with other city neighborhood units, executed a search warrant at 257 W. Jackson St. at 11:46 p.m., confiscating a silver keg with a tap and $36, according to the warrant.

York College spokeswoman Mary Dolheimer said Monday that only a few of those rounded up were not students at the college. The students face disciplinary action by the school in addition to their criminal charges, she added.

The warrant states that two officers went to the house at 257 W. Jackson St. at 10:27 p.m. and paid $5 each — from the department’s “official funds” — to gain entry.

Two men who police said lived at the house were collecting money, and they did not check the officers’ IDs to see if they were of legal drinking age, the warrant states. Once they paid, they could drink beer at the house.

Inside, the officers saw about 25 to 30 people drinking beer, the warrant states.

No one answered the door at the home Monday afternoon.

Michael Black, president of the Southwest Neighborhood Association — which includes West Jackson Street — said Monday that he was not aware of the police raid and that the address wasn’t one known for being a nuisance.

The level of crime in the area appears to have dropped in the past several years, since police established an outpost near the college and formed a patrol unit, he said.

“I think things have been much tamer in the last couple years,” he said. “I don’t have statistics, but I’d be willing to bet crime and disturbances have gone down.”

The last raid he recalled occurred last school year. He hasn’t heard any complaints from neighbors this school year, he added.

With the college’s latest dormitories, fewer students are living off campus, but those who do must undergo education and training on how to conduct themselves as residents of the community, Dolheimer said.

Contrary to what some believe, off-campus students are still under the purview of the college, she said.

“Their behavior is watched just as if they were living on campus,” she said. “We continue to work with police to ensure that students behave appropriately.”

Charges

The 57 partygoers were charged with violating a York ordinance known as “patronizing prohibited,” which says it is illegal to go to any place that sells alcohol without a license.

Three people face misdemeanors, including furnishing alcohol to minors, according to a news release.

As of Monday afternoon, District Judge Ronald Haskell’s office had not yet received paperwork with the names of those cited or charged.

According to the York Dispatch

SELINSGROVE — York College’s Wil Feliciano captured the 800-meter men’s race and lowered his own school-best record with a time of 2:00.94 at the Susquehanna Invitational indoor track and field meet on Sunday.

Feliciano broke the old mark of 2:01.77 he set on Jan. 28.

Phillip Cavaluchi registered a new school record in the 60-meter dash and finished third in the 200. After qualifying for the 60-meter finals with a 7.31 effort, Cavaluchi’s 7.21 time in the finals broke his own school-best of 7.26, set just last week, as he took second in the event. In the 200, the Spartan ran to a :23.98.

Steven Childres established a new school-record in the individual mile at 4:32.06 to take second overall.

In women’s action, York College’s Jasmine Smith established a new York College record in the 200-meter dash on Sunday, running a :27.63. That effort, which provided the Spartan freshman with a third-place finish, marked the fifth time this indoor season that Smith has broken either individually or in a relay a Spartan record.

10 Tips for oral presentations

Pattie Crider

Staff Writer

Here are some simple tips for making a slideshow that works well with your oral presentation.
1. Think “less is more.” Slideshows crammed with words is a complete waste of time. Professors don’t want to hear you read what’s on the screen anymore than you classmates do. Use only a few words and more visual examples to make understanding your topic easier.
2. Pictures are great in slide shows, but make sure they will appear focused on-screen. Only put two to four pictures per slide. (Remember less is more.) Cite where the pictures came from.
3. Don’t use more slides than you can show within your presentation time frame. Five or six well-done slides for an eight minute oral report is good. The focus should be on what you are saying. Flying through sixteen slides is too quick for an audience to grasp and that defeats the whole purpose of the slideshow.
4. Check your slides carefully for typos.
5. Don’t depend on video clips to fill up your time. If the professor wanted video after video, it wouldn’t be an oral presentation. Keep the clips short and to the point. If you really want to show “that winning touchdown” just have video of the throw and catch, not the last four and a half minutes of the game.
6. Try making your slideshow before writing what you want to say. Seeing a picture, chart, graph, quote, etc. can help you organize your thoughts before writing the verbal part of your presentation. This makes everything flow much better.
7. Know what slide is coming up by writing it on your note cards, paper etc. Make some sort of notation on your notes so you know it’s time to move to the next slide. Again, this makes it flow.
8. Do not have gum in your mouth!
9. Act professionally during the presentation. Humor used properly will keep your audience’s attention. If the presentation is on a somber subject then humor would not be proper.
10. Finally, do not use these “filler” words: um, right, kinda, you know, okay, sorta, and, like. “This slide is…um….of David. And he was a shepard….okay. God thought David was sorta special, you know. Kinda like a “superhero”….um….okay” (You get the point)
